There is no way to describe what the effect of a person is on another person. You can try, and you can get close, but finally and ultimately the only person who can really tell you what the effect is, is the one who was affected. The conversation part isn’t all there is to it, because with you it is your eyes, the gently slant, or the stronger shrug that you put into the conversation. It’s the tilt of the shoulder, the way you lean or don’t lean into the comment, even how you hold your hands cross your legs or just sit there, being, quiet. You are subtle and that is how you affect the entire situation.
The first time you allowed me to observe this in action was the day we met, right after you let me know that, “running is my favorite exercise.” What do you say to someone who says that? It just is a statement, it ranks right up there with, “the waters cold,” or, “glad you asked?” What do you say? I wanted to say something witty; “ah yes, passion, the amore’ of life and great times, het?” Or perhaps even a bit of the Latin, “Vita vacuus diligo est non puteus ago” (Life without love is not well lived), or some other clever thing; but what came out was, “uh, huh; running, yeah well, I probably ought to.” Wow, there’s an exciting line to attract the ladies!
But you didn’t flinch, you didn’t smirk, you just kept that steady smiling gaze and replied, “that would be good, why don’t you run with me tomorrow?” Right to the issue, that’s you; and fallin’ on my big flabby face, that was me, “look we just met, and I’m sure you can see, I’m a little out of shape.” Talented understatement.
“Nope, that excuse won’t fly with me, you can run if you want, walk if you need to, but you’ll have a good time, don’t I look like I’m having a great time.” Why do people who are trying to convince you to get into something that isn’t a great time, always tell you that it is? “Yes your smile gives it away…” I was looking for a way to get out of this, but it wasn’t presenting itself, and there you stood.
